Optics is a particularly expensive health post in France, compared to neighboring European countries. This is why "the price observatory and support medical optics" was created by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health.
Poor management of optics
Optics is an important expenditure on health in France. It costs on average 470 euros to afford a pair of glasses, two times more than our European neighbors. Meanwhile the management is still very low, compared to the optical rate. According to a 2013 study, UFC Que Choisir consumer association denounced the tariff glasses practiced in France compared to our European neighbors and the insufficient care by health insurance.
An observatory for optical refund
Faced with the reality that the glasses are 2 e cause of seeking care in France, the purpose of the observatory is to achieve lower rates related to the optical analyzing the prices, the quality of optical equipment and the level of coverage of health insurance or mutual.
The Observatory brings together representatives of state services, the health insurance funds, the organizations complementary health , medical device manufacturers and distributors of optical and insured.
New regulations for health insurance
A more recent survey by the consumer association, the new regulations related toreimbursement by complementary health would not be respected. The association would have sent mystery investigators in 10% of opticians in France, and the results are amazing: 17.9% of them have proposed to falsify the invoice (by increasing tariffs and by reducing the glasses frames) for the customer to be better reimbursed by his health insurance.
Extended care is no longer free to set reimbursement rates glasses. The thresholds are set at 50 euros and 470 euros for single glasses, 200 and 750 euros for complex lenses and frames are reimbursed to a maximum of 150 euros.
